Buffalo, NY
Always a contender and winner of the first ever Capital of the Pierogy Pocket in 2006, Buffalo, New York is certainly one of the top pierogy destinations in the U.S. This year’s entry comes from Corpus Christi Church. During its annual Polish Harvest Festival (Dozynki), the church held the first ever “Best Homemade Pierogi Contest.” Additionally, more than 250 signatures from Buffalo residents were compiled to show the passion and pride Buffalonians have for the pierogy. ”Much like the pierogi itself, the city of Buffalo boasts a long, storied history; a compelling, authentic charm; and a warm, satisfying experience with no pretension.” If named Capital of the Pierogy Pocket, Buffalo will use the title and prize money to fund the church’s “Learn for Life” program and the building that supports it. “Learn for Life” is an English/Language Arts initiative for inner-city children in the church’s neighborhood.
